Communications Intern - San Diego Gulls Hockey Club (San Diego, CA)


The Communications Intern supports the Communication department’s efforts during the AHL season. This individual will possess a strong desire to learn from and contribute to a staff that often operates within a fast-paced, demanding environment. This position reports to the Communications Manager.


  • Compile Media clippings
  • Compile Gulls Player Roster
  • Disseminate updates to the media
  • Produce media credentials and distribute
  • Compose Game notes
  • Statistical research projects
  • Collect audio files for media use
  • Prepare an extensive weekly report on Anaheim Ducks prospects
  • Edit club publications, including the media guide, postseason guide, press releases, weekly updates, etc.
  • Write content and feature stories for Gulls Gazette
  • Collaborate with all internal departments to provide public relations/communications support for marketing, community relations, ticketing, and sales initiatives
  • Overall assistance with a variety of tasks that can change often
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communication/Journalism preferred or in process of completion
  • Six months’ experience within an office environment preferred
  • Understanding of sports marketplace and entertainment industry
  • Must have strong knowledge of the sport of hockey
  • Excellent communication skills, with strong written skills including a strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to take on multiple tasks, completing them on a short deadline in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Extremely flexible schedule, including the ability to work nights and weekends
  • Knowledge and understanding of AP Style is preferred
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Familiarity with media relations practices and community outreach and service activities is a plus
