Griffins Game Night Staff Intern - Grand Rapids Griffins (Grand Rapids, MI)

Reports to: Ticket Operations Manager

The Grand Rapids Griffins, top affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, are looking for an energetic, professional, and self-motivated person looking to gain real-world experience and position themselves for a career in sports business management, where prior experience is looked at as highly desirable by organizations within the industry. Former interns have gone on to gain employment with the Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A’s, West Michigan Whitecaps, Detroit Pistons, & University of Michigan among others. The Game Night Intern will be trained in all aspects of ticket processing and customer service. Interns will be responsible for working in the box office on game nights while providing a memorable experience for fans.

Primary Functions:

This entry-level internship will include game-related duties and responsibilities within the Griffins Ticket Operations, Ticket Sales and Game Operations Departments, including:

Ticket Operations

  • Assist in Box Office set-up, sales, Will Call, and customer service duties on selected game nights.
  • Participate in the promoting of all Griffins ticket related activities including, but not limited to, the distribution of flyers and name collection materials, and the support of any other ticket sales related programs as determined by management.
  • Ensure quality customer service for all Griffins patrons.
  • Opportunities to learn ticketing software and the ticket sales process.
  • Learn departmental policies and procedures.

Ticket Sales Support & Game Operations

  • Assist in the distribution of giveaways and promotional items.
  • Manage fan data collection programs.
  • Assist in the execution of game night plans including contests/promotions on the ice, the concourse, or in the stands.
  • Assist the Ticket Sales Department with various lead generation, marketing research and promotional projects.
  • Run payments and assist with raffles during jersey auctions.
  • Assist with season ticket holder benefits fulfillment.
  • Work on concourse with staff customer service stations to learn how to facilitate in-game issues as they arise.
  • Participate in sales contests, lead generation and other non-game community initiatives.
  • Coordinate and execute afternoon hockey events.

Length of Internship:

• Creativity, exacting attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage a variety of simultaneous tasks and meet deadlines
• Computer proficiency, including Photoshop and web site management
• Self-starting, highly motivated individual with exceptional work ethic and unquestioned dependability
• Personal, professional demeanor
• Astute knowledge of and interest in hockey

Responsibilities:
• Game night responsibilities include but are not limited to press box setup, distribution of media credentials, reporting starting lineups and scratches to the game operations department and media, distributing stats during intermission, and assisting with post-game interviews and multimedia
• Provide additional team coverage for griffinshockey.com by attending practices to write player feature stories and Q&As
• Coordinate the distribution of community program/event materials

Title:  Social Media Intern

Areas of Focus:  Social Media and Game Operations

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise the #GriffinsSocial Lounge during game nights
  • Assist fans with taking photos on the photo kiosk
  • Manage the Griffins photo frame and props
  • Interact and start dialogue with fans about Griffins social media, including informing them about special social media and ticket promotions and theme nights
  • Assist with in-game fan interaction, including handing out prizes and managing contests hosted at the lounge
  • Reach out to fans passing by the Lounge and invite them into the space
  • Communicate Lounge features, such as free wifi, the phone charging station, photo opportunities and social media TV display
  • Come up with ideas for fan interaction at the lounge and coordinate any special props or decorations for theme nights
  • Responsible for set up and tear down of the Lounge

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Current college student working toward a degree in Marketing or Communications, or related field
  • Interest in learning more about social media marketing
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work game nights (including weekend and holiday games)
  • Experience with various social media platforms
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Extremely outgoing personality; comfortable starting conversations with fans
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Creative and detail oriented, with the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Strong customer service orientation as well as presenting a professional presence
