Community Relations Internship - Norfolk Admirals (Norfolk, VA)

The Norfolk Admirals hockey club is seeking interns to assist with the day-to-day operations of the community relations department during the 2014-15 season. This season-long position will report directly to the Director of Community Relations and will be responsible for providing support to the community relations and marketing departments on various projects.


The Norfolk Admirals are located in Norfolk, Virginia, inside Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals are members of the American Hockey League – a professional hockey league only one step away from the National Hockey League. The Admirals serve as the top minor league affiliate for the Anaheim Ducks. Admirals Hockey has been a tradition in the Hampton Roads region for over twenty years.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the development and coordination of community relations programs
- Assist in the planning and execution of numerous community relations events and projects for current and potential organizations and sponsors
- Research prospective community relations sponsors and additional opportunities for Admirals community involvement
- Communicate internally with media relations department to update website and social media outlets with upcoming community relations activities
- Participate on the Admirals game night staff assisting with promotions and community relations activities, including dream team and birthdays.
- Interact with fans and gather valuable fan information
- Assist at team signings, practices and appearances when necessary
- Manage several team related databases including those related to donations, programs, and events
- Receive, process and respond to local charity requests
- Coordinate the Admirals Kid’s Club including special events and monthly newsletter
- Willingness to perform mascot duties at community events and schools
- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Internships offered by the Norfolk Admirals are non-compensated. Intern must receive college credit.
- Senior/junior-year undergraduate student or post-graduate student, majoring in sports management, marketing, communications, public relations or related field
- Candidate must be available to work various nights, weekends, and holidays to support community relations initiatives at all games and other related events
- Must possess great communication and organizational skills, strong initiative, be a team player, and the ability to manage a variety of concurrent tasks and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of video equipment and editing a plus.

Graphic Design Internship - Norfolk Admirals (Norfolk, VA)

The Norfolk Admirals hockey club is seeking a graphic design intern to assist with the club's website, social media assets, arena videoboard and publications in the 2014-15 season. The intern will report to the Communications and Game Operations departments.

 

The Norfolk Admirals are located in Norfolk, Virginia, inside Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals are members of the American Hockey League – a professional hockey league only one level below the National Hockey League. The graphics design intern will be provided with hands-on experience within a fast-paced professional environment. INTERNS WILL GAIN EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Creating graphics for the team website and social media assets

Creating graphics for the Norfolk Scope Arena videoboard for Admirals games

Creating graphics and assist with the design and layout of Admirals publications such as the souvenir program and media guide

Editing, archiving and distributing digital photographs

Creating and maintaining photo galleries for the team website and social media assets

The ideal candidate can also edit videos for the team website, social media assets and Norfolk Scope Arena videoboard for Admirals games

Performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned

The Norfolk Admirals hockey club is seeking two interns to assist with the day-to-day operations of the Communications department during the 2014-15 season. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

The media relations interns will be provided with hands-on experience within a professional sports and media relations environment. The internship will provide someone who desires a career in sports information or media relations with an opportunity to learn the business side of sports and media while gaining valuable career experience, building a portfolio and enjoying networking opportunities in the process.

 

Only individuals interested in possibly pursuing a career in the sports industry should apply. Because most successful people in the sports industry begin as fans themselves, an extensive knowledge of and interest in hockey is required. This allows the intern to be more productive, get more out of the experience, and most importantly, publish credible material.

 

INTERNS WILL GAIN EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Writing and editing regular feature stories for the Admirals website and periodic features for publications/websites such as the Admirals souvenir program and the American Hockey League website

Writing and editing press releases, game summaries and weekly media updates

Facilitating interviews between members of the local and national media and Admirals players, coaches and management

Brainstorming and pitching story ideas to increase coverage of the Admirals in print, radio, television and online media

Producing, compiling and distributing critical information such as press clippings and statistics to the media and to Admirals management and coaching staff before and during practices and games

Updating social networking assets such as Facebook and Twitter including pre-game, in-game and post-game updates

Coordinating the press box on game days – including pre-game setup, supervision during games and post-game duties

Editing, organizing and selecting photos from games and off-ice events
